PSU Digital Sign Slide Technical Guidelines & Specifications

The creation of content for digital displays requires consideration of technical, legal and aesthetic factors. The technical considerations relate to the system's capabilities and limitations. Legal considerations relate to compliance with appropriate copyright laws. Aesthetic considerations relate to making any digital slides and digital videos visually interesting and effective. Aspect ratios for displaying, graphic readability, balance, color, software compatibility, graphics, backgrounds, etc. will also be evaluated, when applicable. Slide content must not infringe on the copyrighted or trademarked works of others. Copyrighted and trademarked materials may include, but are not limited to, logos, digital images, photographs, paintings, movies, videos and written works.

Images

Acceptable formats: JPEG, *PNG, BMP, GIF, TIF, **Powerpoint
*Transparent backgrounds will show up as white.

**Powerpoint-Although Powerpoint slides can't be inserted directly into  the slide show, they can be converted into a static (no motion) JPEG, PNG, etc...You can submit a pre-converted slide or the slide designer can convert the slide.

Unsupported formats: Photoshop (PSD), PDF , Illustrator (AI), Microsoft Office Products such as Word & Publisher, Keynote

Color Profile: RGB (CMYK must be converted to RGB before submission)

Minimum Resolution: 1280 x 720 pixels

Maximum Resolution: 1920 x 1080 pixels

Aspect Ratio: 16:9 prefered

 

 

Videos

Resolution: No videos below DVD quality will be accepted (720x480). The recommended and maximum resolution is 1280x720. Videos should be at a 16:9 or 1:85:1 aspect ratio to be acceptable, however, videos that are a little taller or shorter are acceptable, but be aware that they will be stretched slightly to fit the frame. Videos at a 4:3 aspect ratio must be converted before they can be used.

Video Standard: NTSC or PAL

Recommended format: The only officially recommended format by Scala is: WMV V11 10 mbps or higher.

Other Supported Formats: MPEG, MPEG2, MPEG4 (mp4), MOV,

Supported Codecs: H.264, WMV V11, MPEG4

Audio: Audio is not currently supported

Bitrates: No less than 8000 kbps (8 mbits), Constant Bitrate (CBR).  Variable Bitrate (VBR) is not supported.

Quality: If the software you are using asks for an encoding quality, always use high or best.

Length: Videos meant for signage should be no longer than 30 seconds.  Videos meant for the Entertainment displays can be as long as 2 minutes.

File Size: Videos in high definition will tend to be large video at a 1280x720 resolution.  Please get the advice of a system administrator before uploading any video that is greater than 1GB. Departments on campus may be able to assist you in rendering your video in a smaller file size.
